One of our own is adding her energy, enthusiasm, and artistic ability to “The Women’s Republic” mural in downtown Atascadero to honor the community’s colorful history.
Project Architect Ellen Goodwin and her kids, James and Cate, recently volunteered to paint a mural in their backyard of downtown Atascadero along El Camino Real.
The history-inspired project is the vision of local artist Heather Millenaar, whose design was selected in a mural contest hosted by the Zappos family and Z Villages. The mural features Tent City and City Hall along with city founder (and early supporter of a woman’s right to vote) E.G. Lewis and his wife Mable across a bright landscape with unique embellishments in each corner. Visually inspired by a scenic photography of Highway 46, the 59-foot mural spans an entire wall of the old Founder’s Community Bank on El Camino Real in downtown Atascadero.
Goodwin and her family are among the 100 volunteers who helped paint the new mural and were recently featured in the Atascadero News.
James, who is 10 years old, shared, “It’s really fun painting it,” who also added that he might be an architect when gets older. “I’m doing the bottom part of it. It seems like a really great idea.”
Curious visitors are now able to see the completed mural! It will be an exceptional addition to the annual Colony Days celebration where guests can learn all about the vibrant history of Atascadero – which is a historically significant place in the history of the suffrage movement.
