Studio Design Group Architects are enthusiastic advocates of inclusive design, which is why this video exploring “Deaf Space” really resonated with our team.
‘Deaf Space’ is an approach to architecture and design that is primarily informed by the unique ways in which Deaf people perceive and inhabit space. The focus here is on sensory experience. We live in a world built for people who hear. In designing for all, incorporating elements such as u-shaped rooms, wide hallways, and transparent doors allow individuals to sign side-by-side while maximizing sightline within the surrounding environment.
By respecting Deaf Space, designers can encourage more effective communication while creating spaces for all to thrive.
