After nearly a decade of closure, the newly restored Cayucos Veterans Memorial Hall, Cayucos Landing, has officially reopened its doors. On Monday, more than 200 community members gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the transformation of this beloved civic space.
Originally built around 1875 as the Cass Warehouse, the structure has long served as the architectural and emotional heart of the Cayucos community. It’s hosted everything from town meetings and weddings to dance classes and family reunions. Closed in 2016 due to structural issues and fully shuttered in 2022, the hall has now been brought back to life through a thoughtful and historically grounded $11 million rehabilitation effort.
Studio Design Group is proud to have led the architectural design for this meaningful project. Working in close collaboration with the County of San Luis Obispo and a dedicated group of community advocates, our team helped restore Cayucos Landing in a way that both honors its 150-year legacy and prepares it for the next century of service.
Project Highlights
• A new foundation, raising the building 2.5 feet to address sea level rise
• 6,900 SF ocean-facing deck with beach and pier access
• Reuse of historic materials like redwood siding and shake roofing
• Upgraded interiors with modern flooring and flexible-use spaces for community groups
• Built to align with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Historic Preservation
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
The joy and emotion at the ribbon-cutting were palpable. Longtime Cayucos residents reflected on memories made inside the original hall and looked forward to creating new ones in the updated space. “This patio is awesome, now it’s twice as big, it’s just gorgeous,” Cayucos resident Fernie Monreal told KSBY6. Supervisor Bruce Gibson called it the “civic heart of our community,” and we couldn’t agree more.
The excitement began even before the ribbon was cut. Both KPRL and Cal Coastal News shared early stories highlighting the project’s completion and its significance for the Cayucos community. The Tribune attended and captured the community’s feelings in an article.

A Lasting Legacy
At SDG, it’s an honor to help preserve the places that make the Central Coast special. Cayucos Landing is more than a building. It’s a shared memory, a future gathering place, and a symbol of what’s possible when a community comes together.
