San Luis Obispo Classical Academy – Broad Street Campus
Studio Design Group’s work for San Luis Obispo Classical Academy reimagines an existing commercial office building as a permanent, consolidated campus serving infant care through K–8 education. Located at 3450 Broad Street, the project adapts a 52,000-square-foot office park into a flexible learning environment that brings together three previously separate SLOCA locations under one roof.
The adaptive reuse project includes extensive interior tenant improvements to create classrooms, preschool and infant care rooms, a gym and gym lobby, a library with mezzanine, administrative offices, and meeting spaces—while preserving SLOCA’s commitment to small class sizes and a community-centered educational model. Interior design and architectural collaboration is provided by Design Architect Bryan Ridley of Bracket Architecture, supporting the development of learning environments that align with SLOCA’s mission. Exterior improvements are intentionally modest, focusing on a refreshed façade and daylight enhancements, while outdoor spaces are transformed to include a new field, outdoor learning areas, classroom decks, and expanded landscaping.
Structural upgrades to the existing steel frame were required to meet school occupancy standards, and the project navigates a tight construction timeline and phased occupancy as existing tenants transition out. Drawing from SDG’s prior work with SLOCA, including the SLOCA High School, the design carries forward a shared interior language to create continuity across campuses.
